World Day for Safety and Health at Work

World Day for Safety and Health is observed every year on 28 April and aims to raise awareness about the prevention of occupational accidents and ill health globally.

Throughout the week commencing Monday, 29 April, we commemorated this day in our bases around the world to further promote the importance of safety and health in our organisation.

The activities throughout the week were coordinated by the global HSE team with the delivery of a variety of safety-inspired workshops, drop-in sessions, and communications across our locations.

Aberdeen

The OSRL Aberdeen Team was treated to a useful sharing session on Psychological Safety by Hannah Curd (Church) (ex-OSRL, current Shell Emergency Management Team) for World Safety and Health Day. Hannah shared a presentation and her own experience to run a thought-provoking session.

Bahrain

In Bahrain, one of our Senior Response Specialists, Mohamed Darwish Moustafa, and our Regional HSE Advisor, Rossdi Nasir delivered a safety standdown, discussing Risk Assessments and Safety Reporting.

Southampton

In Southampton, we ran a combination of sessions from a variety of departments on Tuesday 30 April. The departments focused on a range of activities, including First aid and CPR training – complete with fake wounds to make the simulation more life-like, the use of Virtual Reality in health and safety training demos, health-related topics, and the issue of seasickness, as well as a travel safety-related quiz.

Singapore

In Singapore, we celebrated the day through a range of sessions relating to the topic, with our Regional HSEQ Advisor for the APAC region, Rossdi Nasir, taking the lead with support from Janvin Sidhu, Global Organisational Development Manager, on activities throughout the day. The topics they covered during their sessions included case studies on the impacts of extreme weather, initiatives on waste management, heat stress and its impact on productivity, safe travel, and the impact of climate change on safety.

Fort Lauderdale and Brazil

In the America’s, we ran a range of sessions on safety topics and occupational health topics, including, Life Saving Rules, CPR, DSE and Manual Handling. We also launched the translated versions (Portuguese and Spanish) of the Health and Safety Handbook.

Climate change is one of the topics of this year’s World Day for Safety and Health, with it already having serious impacts on planetary health, human health, and the world of work, with workers being frequently exposed to the effects of climate change and often for long periods of time and at great intensity. This is relevant to OSRL due to the nature of the work and our role in mitigating the impact on the environment.
