What Will I Learn?

This course will give you the essential skills and knowledge required to perform the role of a first responder in the event of an oil spill in your role of a Jetty Operator. From understanding the behaviour of oil in the environment to help determine the best response strategy, through to the deployment of response equipment, the combination of tabletop and hands-on exercises will equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a key oil spill response team member.

Throughout this course, you will learn and experience the following:

  • Discover the fates and effects of oil and how it behaves in the environment
  • Explore the social, economic and environmental impacts that determine response priorities and strategies to minimise impact
  • Understand response tools and equipment, including limitations for use and maintenance procedures
  • Practice deploying response equipment utilised during a first response
  • Recognise the hazards and risks that responders face in an oil spill environment and how these may be mitigated
  • Learn at which points the response operations can be terminated and the process of waste management.
