This IMO Equivalent Training Course is certified by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

This course is ideal for Supervisors of response teams at ports and harbours and those required to conduct shoreline spill response.

This course will give you the knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Awareness of shoreline types, environmental issues, site assessment and set-up, response strategies, equipment and site waste management
  • Hands-on equipment experience 
  • Organise the resources safely and efficiently at the spill site
  • Fully utilise the resources available on a site effectively
Course Programme

Alongside conducting various exercises interwoven within your learning, during this course, you will cover the following topics:

  • Causes and fates of marine oil spills
  • Awareness of contingency planning, its importance and its use
  • Monitoring and evaluating of oil spills, alongside environmental considerations
  • Overview of response strategies, including containment and protection, booming, and Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT)
  • Practicalities of oil spills, including the various hazards to responders and safety aspects to consider
  • Overview of response equipment, including recovery devices and a tour of a Tier 3 stockpile
  • The management structure of spill response, including the daily tasks, the importance of log keeping, briefings, and communications to be carried out
  • Waste management and disposal
