UKCS Onshore Emergency Responder (OPEP Level 3)

Our comprehensive face-to-face training is designed to cover UK legislation, the roles and responsibilities of various UK agencies and how to develop and implement an Incident Action Plan (IAP). This course is designed for individuals who are required to fulfil the role of Onshore Emergency Responder in the event of an oil spill in UKCS waters.

In this immersive classroom-based experience, we focus on the Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (OPEP), outlining the steps required to initiate a successful response in UKCS waters. This training assists you in developing spill response strategies and highlights the statutory reporting requirements and the communication required to relevant UK government agencies.

Is This Course Right For Me?

This training course is essential for those undertaking the role of an Environmental Advisor during an oil spill response in UKCS waters, providing you with the required UK training standard. This course is BEIS-accredited and is the minimum requirement for anyone fulfilling the aforementioned role. 

This course accreditation is valid for 3 years*

*Refresher training (UKCS Responder Refresher (OPEP Levels 3 & 4)) must be completed within 3 months of certificate expiry. Full recertification will be required if a refresher course is not taken within the stated timeframe. 

What Will I Learn On This Course?

Throughout this interactive course, you will receive a comprehensive overview of oil spill response, taking guidance from the OPEP. You will explore oil behaviours in the environment along with applicable spill response techniques. Covering UK legislation, this course outlines the statutory reporting requirements, ensuring you understand which relevant UK government agencies you may require to have ongoing communications with, as well as understanding the role of the Secretary of State’s Representative (SOSREP) and the functions of the Operations Control Unit (OCU).

As an essential training course for operating in the UKCS, you will learn and experience the following:

  • Assessing the situation and activating the Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (OPEP)
  • Developing a spill response strategy
  • Establishment and organisation of a response structure
  • Activation of spill response operations
  • Management and control of an ongoing spill response
