Offshore In-Situ Burn Operations Field Guide

This short field guide is intended to be used by anyone who is conducting In-Situ Burn (ISB) operations to combat oil spills at sea. Included are the safety considerations for ISB use, guidance on equipment use and operational requirements.

A decision making process should be conducted prior to any operations being undertaken to ensure that ISB is a suitable strategy for the spill scenario. If ISB is suitable:

  • It is logistically straightforward
  • It has an effective oil removal rate
  • There is a significant reduction in waste generation, compared to other strategies such as containment and recovery.
