Beyond The Model
Oil spill modelling is a valuable tool for predicting where oil may go and how it may behave but understanding the vast amount of data it produces is often a challenge to apply practically. In this engaging 30 minute talk, Liam, OSRL's globally recognised Geomatics specialist, gives his view on the state of oil spill modelling. He will talk about how his and other specialist teams take the model data further to best provide information to a decision support tool. Liam will cover the following topics:
- Why are we modelling? An overview of the different applications of oil spill modelling and how the service can integrate with other services for added value. Examples include: oil spill contingency plans, environmental impact studies, modelling in a response, deciding on the best equipment, locating a new equipment base.
- Show me what I need not what you think I need? How each application leads to a different approach to visualising the data so that it best suits the purpose and audience.
- What is Liam's "beef" with probability maps? Why Liam really dislikes probability maps and how he thinks they aren't used correctly.
