On 18 March 1967, the Torrey Canyon cargo ship was travelling from Kuwait to Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, when it ran aground on rocks off the coast of Cornwall, spilling over 100,000 tonnes of crude oil into the English Channel. Oil Spill Response Limited was recently part of a trial at Shamrock Quay Marina, in partnership with the UK and Ireland Spill Association, Oracle Environmental, and the University of Southampton, to test and review the effectiveness of our equipment in different shore-side environments.

An interactive Deep Dive session on Oil Spill Preparedness and Response held at the Clean Pacific Roundtable, explored the broad marine spill risks associated with the shipping industry operating in the Pacific Ocean. 

OSRL partnered with Chiron K9 in 2019 to provide canine oil detection services to our members on a non-guaranteed, best endeavours basis as an additional service to our Service Level Agreement.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic does not mean that we can’t continue delivering our preparedness services. Drawing on our own experience of managing recent virtual exercises and incident management teams, both internal and with members, we believe OSRL has some valuable lessons learned to share with industry.

OSRL is pleased to announce the launch of a unique new tool to support the industry in the event of a spill. The Global Dispersant Inventory map offers a summary of location, volume and type of dispersant stockpile to enable faster, smarter decision-making when time is of the essence. 

Last week, OSRL personnel participated in a joint offshore deployment exercise with the Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC). Taking place off the coast of Miami, Florida, the event was an opportunity for both organisations to share best-practice approaches and build an effective foundation for future collaboration.
